African Grey Parrot
African Grey Parrots are the most prolific talkers in the parrot family. These amazing birds have the intellectual abilities of a young child up to five years old. But their emotional development is only that of up to a 3 year old. That means they are like a really smart kid that will throw tantrums, pout, demand and reject loving attention on a whim, with the vocal ability to tell you off! Our African Grey (CAG) has a personality that is both ingratiating and grating. He knows what he wants, when he wants it and how you should give it to him. And he has no problems telling you so. He will tell you "No" if he doesn't want you to pet him, "Get out of there!" if he doesn't want you to refresh his seeds, "fresh water" when he wants it, and "Shut up!" when he tires of the dog barking. He can also use words he knows in a variety of tonal inflections just like we do, including sarcasm! These amazing birds make wonderful additions to your family. They can express their likes and dislikes and wants as well as their emotions. African Grey's usually bond with one person. Sometimes they will not permit anyone other than that person to handle them but that isn't always the case. They are as individual as humans are. If you are considering an African Grey Parrot as a pet in your home, be sure to study up on them before making the committment. There are a variety of foods that they can't eat and you need to know them. They also require a lot of human interaction as their intelligence is very high and they need the stimulus to be mentally healthy. We often turn the television down to listen to ours. He comes up with something new almost every day! Be prepared to fall in love with your bird and remember he can outlive you - they have a potential life span of 80 years. It's a good idea to have someone willing to inherit him that you trust. Be prepared to enrich your life if you get an African Grey! |
