Native American Pow Wow
Native Americans have a custom of gathering together to celebrate, enjoy fellowship and dance. We call it a Pow Wow. The traditional dances are always enjoyable for the viewers as well as the dancers. Many different styles of dancing can be seen at a pow wow. They are always colorful but some are exciting with incredible athletic steps while others are simply breathtakingly regal. Pow wow consists of more than the dancers though. There are also the singers that gather around the drum. There are always staff members to guide the pow wow. A Head Man and Woman lead the dances, an M.C. announces the events and engages the public, an Arena leader keeps the dancers in order and protect the boundaries from straying pedestrians as well as many more staff members. Some pow wows are held indoors and some are held on campgrounds where the dancers often camp for the duration of the pow wow. Many times, in the evening hours and usually well past closing time, the singers will gather around a fire and sing 49er's. This is a song style that is a more "modern" song sang in English and set to the unique beat of the drum. The public is always welcome to come and learn about their country's first citizens and enjoy their cultural celebrations. Plan on joining in the dancing during intertribals so you can fully experience the fun and wonder of Pow Wow. |
